Leo season is in full swing. This will flavour our theme with all things sunny.
We in the Southern Hemisphere are fixed into the winter season, so sunshine will cheer us up in the cold.
Where in the Northern hemisphere they are experiencing mid-summer and are enjoying the warmth of the sun.
However, I am blessed to have swum in the sea just yesterday, so my winter here on the sunshine coast is hardly horrible.
Before we dive into this month’s theme, remember to check out the posts on Mars, Venus, Mercury and Moon.
Can I start by saying if you know nothing about astrology except that your ‘star’ sign is… (insert your own), then what you actually know is where the sun was at the time of your birth.
Your ‘star’ sign is really your sun sign.
Although the sun is a star so it’s not totally wrong.
Do you know with online learning my 8- and 10-year-olds have both been learning about the solar system, while I am in a solar system theme…coincidence, or magic? You know my answer.
Example; the sun was in Gemini when I was born, I am therefore a Gemini.
This is far from the complete picture, but it is the starting point for most of us.
If you have planets or points in the sign of Leo, the Sun theme will resonate more strongly for you, because the Sun rules the sign of Leo.
Hey, I don’t want to overwhelm you, if your curiosity and interest is piqued, you may want to get in touch.
Sun
The Sun has been worshiped across all cultures since the beginning of time.
Sun is life giving.
Each day he rises, bringing warmth, making crops grow and shedding light on the dangers that hide in the night.
The Sun is more of a masculine energy.
I, like the Native Americans like to refer to him as Grandfather Sun.
Like Grandmother Moon last month, there are a lot of references through history and myth where the sun is worshiped and revered.
Horace of Egypt, son to Isis and Osiris is primarily a sun god.
Greek Mythology has Helios the
sun god and Titan.
His sister Selene a goddess of the moon.
The element Helium on the periodic table was named after him.
He was however somewhat eclipsed by Apollo the god of light who became associates as a solar deity.
His twin sister is Artemis is associated with the moon.
It was Apollo who inspired the Olympic games.
One of his symbols is the Laurel Wreath (a crown of laurel/bay leaf) worn by the Olympic winners. Appropriate symbolism I dare say.
Sol was the personification of the sun (sun god) in the Roman empire.
In Vedic traditions you may see Surya as the primary sun god.
Also known as Mitra, Ravi, Bhanu and more.
But before I get carried away, this is merely a brief synopsis of the Sun in mythology.
There are even a few that see sun goddess and moon god as I mentioned last month.
Harnessing Sun…
In astrology, Grandfather Sun shows us the brightest expression of Oneself.
As the brightest luminary it is the space in our chart where the most light is shed.
Grandfather Sun rules the sign of Leo the lion and loves to be in Aries.
He is less comfortable in Aquarius and Libra.
Often this is the aspect of your personality that at first only comes out in the places you feel safe.
As you grow into yourself it becomes more integrated.
You hopefully learn to stand in your light and power and your sun aspect of your personality gets the chance to shine.
Now if you are thinking I know lots of Libras/Capricorns/Scorpios (whatever the sign may be) and they are nothing alike, so this makes no sense.
Please remember that this is the tip of the iceberg.
Look back at previous posts to see that you think more like your Mercury sign, you Feel more based on your Moon sign, Mars shows how you get what you want and Venus how you love and so on.
The Sun is the most known and one of the most vital things to know in your chart…but it is one aspect of you, not the whole picture.
Astrology for me is like a puzzle, where there are always more layers and intricacies. It shows us our potential glories and pitfalls. What we do with our potential, is up to us.
Spotlight Advice
Tuning in with Sun
If you are resonating strongly with this Archetype, then I am going to give you a few suggestions.
Just to mention, these action steps are for the brave, if it seems too much, trust that.
This work is very rewarding, but it is also filled with challenge.
A need to strip oneself bare and learn to accept all of you.
If on the other hand you are ready for the bright light of consciousness to travel with you on your journey, helping you to shine light into the shadows and expose what has been hidden from you, then here is how to get started.
It is also extremely helpful to have a guide or mentor when doing shadow work so please don’t hesitate to contact me or a coach/healer you already work with.
Action Steps
1) How do I shine: know your sun sign (star sign) and realise that your soul chose to come and shine it’s brightest in that way.
If you know the house your sun is in, this adds the where do I shine part of the equation.
I will use myself to give a simplified example.
My sun is in Gemini in the 11th house.
I promised to be curious, learning and communicating (Gemini) to groups of people in the service of humanity (11th house).
Which is what I am doing now.
2) Following the sun: This is more easily done if you know what house your natal sun is in.
You can however work more internally with the archetype of the sign the sun is in.
When the sun is in Leo, as it is now, you feel into the Leo qualities in you.
When sun shifts to Virgo, you shift your focus to the Virgo in you.
If you know the house the sign is in nataly you will be able to add that.
Each year when the sun goes into Leo I am working in my 12th and 1st house areas of my life. 12th endings, sadness, loss, secrets, obstacles and loss of support. 1st beginnings, myself, my body, how I show up in the world.
3) Step up and Shine: If you are not shining where you should, how can you change that.
This requires knowing your sun sign in its higher and lower expressions.
Ideally the house too.
And then with radical honesty and authenticity…no judgment or shaming, asking yourself, how can I show up and shine?
Again, using myself as an example my soul promised to keep learning and teaching and to never stop my voice (Gemini sun in the 11th house).
However, when, like now in the 12th house I feel overwhelmed and obstacles feel too big, I consider a normal job, with a reliable income. My heart hurts to think of not doing my soul’s work.
Usually once I shift into the 1st house, I find my strength to stand tall and strong, to climb up, over, around or even through my obstacles and just keep showing up with radical surrender and faith.
For those interested in seeing some similar but different examples I will use some of my family to show how the same sun or house can manifest quite differently.
Sun in Gemini in the 9th house - I promise to be curious, versatile and smart (Gemini) as I work globally using my spiritual outlook on life (9th house).
Sun in Gemini in the 1st house - I promised to be chatty, witty and gather information (Gemini) as I show up in the world, my self-image is connected to how well I balance Gemini (1st house).
Sun in Aquarius in the 9th house – I promise to be quirky, full of ideas and Ideals (Aquarius) as I travel the world learning about religion and philosophy (9th house).
This gives three Gemini sun examples and two 9th house examples.
I know I sound like a stuck record, but this is one example of a fractal of possibilities, and it is a positive expression rather that a shadow expression of each example.

Astrology Buzz
Leo July 23rd to Aug 22nd Leo season may see us shining so damn brightly, we don’t know when to get off the stage.
Or getting stage fright and fleeing for the safety of the shadows.
If we are lucky it will connect us to a balanced version of being the boss and delegating, being a warm hearted, benevolent leader who knows when to rest and have fun.
Virgo Aug 23rd to Sep 22nd time to attend to the details.
To do your chores and daily practices of self-care that keep you healthy and well and able to be of service to the world.
Progress and not perfection should be your motto when Virgo season rolls around.
As she has a desire to be like Mary Poppins, practically perfect in every way. But she will always have imposter syndrome, no matter how well she is doing. Be kind, to you and everyone else.
New Moon:
August New Moon is on the 8th in the sign of Leo.
Red Tent with the Lunar Lionesses
This year the Leo New Moon falls on the 8/8 Lions Gate portal!!!
This is a portal that brings in more light on 8/8 every year.
This year Mercury is in Leo as well as the Sun and Moon.
Planting seeds for new thinking, feeling, and shining into our future and the future of humanity.

Shona has her Sun in Leo and I have Leo rising, this is how we came to the name, Lunar Lionesses of the Red Tent.
It is also why we are destined to shine a light or be a light house for those who are not sure how to begin a journey of a lifetime.
We learn to use the Moon’s navigational pull alongside the energy of the astrological sign she is passing through, to support us and our emotions as we navigate life.
As we learn the ancient wisdom of Grandmother Moon and how to sow your seeds of intention at New Moon and to nurture those seeds intentionally through the month, magic happens.

Full Moon
If you have ever heard of 13 moons, here is why.
As a Moon cycle is 28 to 29 days long, and a solar month is 30 to 31 days we end up with a little extra space for the moon to make up in the 12-month solar cycle.
This means we see a 13th full or new moon in a year.
Or you can look at it as a double full/new moon in a sign.
Last year we had two Cancer New Moons and this year, this will be our 2nd Full Moon in Aquarius.
August full moon is in Aquarius on the 22nd opposing the Sun in Leo.
With New Moon this month falling on the powerful 8/8 Lions Gate we then add to the magic with the Aquarius Full Moon landing on the master number 22, the number of the Master Builder…
These are both fixed signs, which means they are slow to change and will fixate until a job is done.
Leo is large and in charge, where Aquarius is hive mind.
Physically look to support the heart, circulatory and nervous systems, calves, Achilles heels and ankles.
Here are some questions to reflect on that energy.
Physically look to support the heart, circulatory and nervous systems, calves, Achilles heels and ankles.
Questions you may ask yourself in Leo/Aquarius.
How can I find the balance between being a self-confident individual and making time for myself to shine, while recognizing we are all one and I am no better or worse than anyone else?
If you are Leo dominant – Where am I so full of my own self-importance that I stop thinking about the needs of all?
If you are Aquarius dominant – Where am I so fixated on the big picture that I come across as cold and detached when dealing with people one on one?
If even one of these triggers you on some level, take the time to think about it, journal or meditate on it.
Use these tools mindfully and if you need extra support and guidance, I am available for consultations.
Crystal picks for August
Sun Theme
Sunstone as the name suggests, has a strong connection to the sun.
It is a good stone for leadership, confidence and courage.
Helping to dispel depression and anxiety.
It helps expand us from the inside out, shining a light into the dark allowing us to transform.
It is not the commonly found.
One of my bug bears is crystals being sold as something they are not, I was caught out like that in my early days as a crystal lover.
Goldstone which is a manmade stone is sometimes labelled as sunstone.
They are quite different as you can see.
Citrine yes, I know I covered Citrine in the Mercury crystals because of its connection to our mental faculties.
But the first way I always describe this crystal is as encapsulated sunlight, so it must be mentioned again.
It is the ideal happy stone, bringing clarity, expansion and joy.
Like sunstone it is a crystal that brings about abundance.
That is why I have one in my purse.
Citrine is a member of the quartz family, which brings us to the third pick.
Clear Quartz is less obviously linked to the sun, but in my selection just slightly nudged out Amber (also a goodie) and I will tell you why.
Clear Quartz, often called rock crystal is the master crystal.
Did you know about 20% of the Earth’s crust is made up of Clear Quarts, and 12% of the lands surface?
We live in the Solar System, which is heliocentric, meaning the sun is at the center of our solar system.
So, when talking about the masterful sun at our center, it feels appropriate that the master crystal be mentioned.
And if you have ever seen a beautiful high-quality quartz you may mistake it for glass it is so clear.
When the sun is shining for you, he demands transparency to let light in, and this is facilitated with clear quartz.
Disclaimer: crystals should not be used as cures but rather as support.
Whoop whoop, you can even book a crystal healing session from anywhere in the world via my website now.
Aromas of the month
Frankincense and Laurel Leaf are my pics for Grandfather Sun.
Frankincense is the King of oils, and as such is the crowning glory like the rays of the sun.
Frank gets his title as king because he is so versatile and can be used for just about anything you can imagine.
To list a few of my favourite Frank properties, anti-inflammatory, immunostimulant, antidepressant, restorative and more.
It is invaluable for support in the treatment of cancer, dementia, autoimmune disorders, wound healing, emotional trauma, headaches, respiratory support and the list continues.
It also has a great effect in supporting us with meditation practice and spiritual connection.
Let there be light, the sun and frankincense, a match made in heaven.
Laurel Leaf is also known as Bay leaf and as I mentioned earlier was used by the ancient Greeks and Romans as a symbol of success and victory.
It has also long been used in a culinary capacity to flavour soups, sauces and stews.
The essential oil has a strong herbaceous, slightly spicy aroma.
If you have smelt doTERRA’s Breathe blend you will be familiar with its eucalyptol notes. It is fantastic for the respiratory system and for germ busting in all forms.
Did you know when looking at old images like this, that the leaves were laural/bay?
Uses and Blend suggestions:
