What's Your Rising Sign?

Updated: Oct 28, 2022

October 2021

Here we are, a new season and the finish line for 2021 almost within our sights.

Mercury will be retrograde in Libra till the 18th and still experiencing the shadow into the first part of November.

This month sees us learning about our Ascendant, also known as the rising sign.

Yes, I know this is not a planet, but it is part of what is known in astrology as the Big 3.

These being your Sun, Moon and Rising Signs.

They get extra clout. Even though the Ascendant is a point on your chart, rather than a planet, it shows you how you show up in the world and sets up your houses…more on that in a moment.

Before we dive into this month’s theme, here is the link to my website which has the posts on the personal planets which we have covered thus far.

Have you seen my website?

The Ascendant

Just to clarify if someone wants to know your Ascendant and you only know your Rising sign, or the other way around please remember they are one and the same.

Which is why I am peppering this newsletter with both names.

The Ascendant is the most time sensitive point on your chart because every 2 hours the sign on the Ascendant changes.

So here is a little simple (the only kind I am comfortable with) math to understand about astrology…yes, it is very mathematical.

There are 12 astrological signs, and each one occupies 30 degrees of your chart.

12 x 30 = 360 this forms a full circle, or the zodiacal wheel.

The Rising sign is the degree point that shows us where the sun was rising or ascending at the exact time of our birth.

And it moves a degree point every 4 minutes or so! This is where our Natal chart becomes more nuanced and personal. It is like a photograph of the constantly moving cosmos.

A fingerprint of the sky and how it was looking down on you, blessing you with this intricate web of infinite potential. All the planets like eager relatives waiting to see what this little new-born will become.

Knowing your exact birth time is important for this one, although there are so many things to learn about yourself and your chart if this information is not at hand.

Seen above is my Natal Chart. If you look at the thick black line, across the centre, that is the horizon. On the left at 20 degrees of Leo is my AC (Ascendant).

Harnessing Your Rising Sign…

In astrology, we have 12 houses, this can all get complicated, so we are looking to keep it simple here.

The Ascendant is the degree point of a certain sign on the horizon, which then begins the 1st house.

Each house talks to a different area of life.

In order not to get too long winded we will not discuss all the different houses, but as an example the 4th house talks about home, roots and security, the 7th your relationships and the 10th your work or highest potential.

We are looking at the Ascendant and the sign there as the ruler of your 1st house will tell you more about you, your body, how you show up.

Sometimes referred to as the face of the person or the mask we wear.

We will often have the look of our rising sign.

The planet that rules this sign is your chart ruler as well, making it extra powerful in your chart.

I have Leo rising, Leo is ruled by the Sun. Sun is enhanced in my chart, so my Gemini Sun is enhanced.

In medical astrology it is also one of the very important signs to help us understand which organs and organ systems will need more focus and care, because it is the sign that talks to our physical body.

If you have ever wondered why you don’t resonate with your sun sign (star sign) it may be that you are more connected to your rising sign.

Usually, we are born and show up as our rising sign.

As our soul moves into our physical form.

We only show our sun sign when we feel safe.

As we grow up, we hopefully integrate the two and can harness the potential of both.

If your Ascendant and Sun signs work well together this is an easier journey.

Sometimes many lessons are learned as we try to manage two very different energies.

I am going to give you a few examples I know.

Aries Rising, and Cancer Sun – to the outside world he is a confident character, with a strong muscly build and a lot of physical force (Aries). At home he is very sensitive and emotional, clams up when vulnerable, needing nurturing even when he is unable to ask for it (Cancer).

Capricorn Rising, and Scorpio Sun - she shows up in the world as a leader, who is organized, efficient and reliable (Capricorn). To those who know her well, she is fiercely loyal, emotional but won’t show it easily and will go where angels fear to tread if it is needed (Scorpio).

Sagittarius Rising, and Libra Sun – First you will see her passion, her sense of adventure and love of life, her joy in a philosophical conversation (Sag). If you stick around, you will notice how she will go to any length to help you, in the way you need. Usually putting the needs of everyone before her own (Libra).

Spotlight Advice

Tuning in with the Ascendent

If you know your Rising sign, then these are some ideas of how to further uncover aspects of your potential on either end of the spectrum.

It is also extremely helpful to have a guide or mentor when doing your work.

Yes, that is what it is to traverse the layers and depths of yourself.

Sometimes it’s gory other times there is glory and most often it is just a day in the life of you.

Do your work. You are worth it.

This month I am offering a short support to tell you your Sun, Moon and Rising signs. How they communicate and resonate with one another for R180.

Action Steps

1) Learn your Ascendant: if possible, it will be good to find out your ascendant, or if you already know to brush up on your rising sign.

If you don’t know try feeling into the element in our next action step to see which feels right for you.

If you do know or can find your sign recognize that this is how you show up.

This is the face you show first.

Example: I am Leo rising, I promised to show up as a bright light, confident, a leader, the boss.

I could also show up in Leo shadow traits, bossy, self-involved, insecure, arrogant.

2) What’s your element: This is fun, and there are only 4 to choose from rather than the 12 signs. So, if you don’t know your rising sign you may feel it.

Think of the energy of each of the elements, where are they great, where are they tough?

Fire – Aries, Leo, Sagittarius

Are you busy, driven to do all the time, passionate, creative, prone to hot conditions (rashes, fevers, heartburn, inflammation etc)? Does your body need high impact activity to defuse tension?

Earth – Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn

Are you happiest working slow and steady? Methodical, reliable, stubborn, organised? Perhaps your body is prone to stiffness of joints, sluggishness in digestion or lymph for example, blocked sinus? Is consistent more gentle and slow exercise more your speed?

Air – Gemini, Libra, Aquarius

Are you quick thinking, fast talking, ever curious, always learning, teaching, or sometimes preaching? Do you struggle with nervous tension, anxiety, circulatory issues, or trouble with your lungs? Do you do yoga and breath work…or are you just breath_less?

Water – Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces

Are you compassionate, sensitive, musical, moody, aware of how others feel? Are you more likely to struggle with cold conditions (cold extremities, chills, water retention)? Do you have a love or hate relationship with water sports? Do you love dance or anything with graceful and free movement?

3) Play in your toolbox: Now is the time to open the lid of your toolbox, look at all the tools you have acquired so far and find 3 that work well for you now.

Especially with your Rising sign in mind.

Here are a few examples;

A Gemini may have journaling or regular coffee dates with a friend on their list.

A Virgo may find time with their pet or devoting time to caring for an elderly relative supportive.

Sagittarians may enjoy learning a foreign language or exploring different spiritual beliefs fill their cup.

Pisces may want to listen to classical music or journal their dreams floats their boat.

What are your top three tools at this time in your life?

Contact me for more info on, personal coaching, healing, yoga or meditation.

I am doing yoga via Zoom Monday at 10:30, Wednesday 17:30 and Thursday at 8am.

Astrology Buzz

Libra Sep 23rd to Oct 22nd is not the most decisive of signs, and now we have Mercury retrograde in Libra till the 18th!!! And then we have a slightly passive aggressive Mars in Libra all month too.

This will only add to the indecision and lack of action.

It does make it a powerful time for some deep thinking and reflecting on where our thinking has gotten us and how to change that up if we want a different result.

Scorpio Oct 23rd to Nov 22nd Are you ready to stop worrying about what other people thing and to get real with what you feel?

Are you looking for deep and meaningful connection and are you willing to transform yourself to get it?

Scorpio demands depth and is powerfully transformative…don’t let that become destructive power plays though if you can help it.

New Moon: October New Moon is on the 6th in the sign of Libra.

Full Moon

September full moon is in the last degrees of Aries on the 20th opposing the Sun in Libra.

These are both cardinal signs, which means we have strong and conflicting ideas of how to initiate change.

Aries is ‘I work alone, only I can do the job’, where Libra says, ‘if we work together, it could be better, but only if you want to?’

Here are some questions to reflect on that energy.

Physically look to support the head, kidneys, nervous and immune systems.

Questions you may ask yourself in Aries/Libra.

In which relationships am I quickly triggered, and why?

If you are Aries dominant – How can I be less reactive and more of a team player?

If you are Libra dominant – How can I become more independent, trusting myself to make my own decisions?

If even one of these triggers you on some level, take the time to think about it, journal or meditate on it.

Use these tools mindfully and if you need extra support and guidance, I am available for consultations.

Crystal picks for October

This month we are going to look at how to choose crystals.

It is impossible to give you 12 options, one for each sign and do them justice in the context of this newsletter.

And that is assuming you even know your Ascendant.

With that in mind I have decided that this is the perfect opportunity to give you some tips to intuitively choose the right crystal/s for you. When you work this way, whether you choose a stone that works for your rising sign, sun, moon or whatever planet you will be choosing what you need in that moment.

As adults we become so shut off, that we feel we need to ask a professional (nice but not necessary) or consult with a book.

Children on the other hand are amazing.

Many a time parents have come with their kids to let them select crystals.

I open my boxes of tumbled stones and watch their faces light up, their eyes begin to dart, there fingers moving in like selecting a chocolate from the box.

I feel their excitement, pleasure, and joy as I still feel it myself when working with or choosing crystals.

When they have chosen, their mother asks, “what are these good for?”

And though they have very different selections, and have never studied crystals, they have invariably chosen exactly what they need.

This is because they trust what they know, without thinking about it.

So, when selecting crystals, PLEASE get out of your head. Breathe, slow down as you gaze at the crystals, notice which ones begin to pull you like magnets.

It may not be the biggest, brightest or prettiest stone…don’t be fooled small can sometimes be more powerful.

Uncut diamonds can appear like grubby little stones, that does not detract from the magic within.

A bit like the adage don’t judge a book by its cover.

Feel into the right crystals, ours is not to wonder why…that is the head, there is time for that later.

When you arrive at the container full of Aventurine (an example) which green draws you, the paler, the darker? Which shape attracts you, which size?

Hold your selected stone at your heart for a few breaths.

Does it fit?

When you have done this, I also recommend NOT jumping onto google your stone for a few days.

First spend time with it…or them (who can buy only 1?!) get to know what you feel when around this little gift of the earth.

Then google, but always remember you were right, what you felt and sensed from your crystal was right.

Even if you don’t see that on google.

For example you spend time with you newly acquired Aventurine, and every time you are with it you feel as if someone is pulling you to the left and feel quite off balance.

Google then informs you it is a good crystal for balance…” I must be wrong” you think, “clearly I have no intuition”.

If you step out of self-judgement you may reflect that you have been out of balance and the Aventurine was helping, get you back…it felt out of balance because you are so used to being out of balance you have learned to feel balanced in your imbalance.

Goodness Libra key words are flying without me even trying.

Aromas of the month

Here too, I want to look at how you are using and choosing your oils.

We use oils in three main ways.

1) Aromatically – through inhalation which can be done in a myriad of ways and is the safest way to use oils.

2) Topically – applied to the body, as close to the area you want to support. Dilution is advised, and not into any orifices.

3) Internally – I only recommend doTERRA for internal use as I know the quality to high. Even then, not all oils are safe for consumption.

Note: How Fast do Essential oils work?

It takes 22 seconds for the molecules to reach the brain.

In 2 minutes, Essential oils will be found in the bloodstream.

By 20 minutes they will affect every cell in the body.

Choosing oils can be as intuitive as it is with crystals, what smell is attracting you or repelling you.

Sometimes however we need what repels us to bring us into balance.

Mostly though I recommend, if the oil you wanted to use for gut health smells like liquorish which you hate, try another gut oil, like peppermint.

If peppermint is too strong, try spearmint.

Basically, experiment and recognize how your body reacts.

The Rising sign is the sign that most relates to our body.

Tuning into our bodies responses as we experiment and play with our oils will be an act of self-care and self-reflection.

Here is an example of how I know my body appreciates oils for digestive support.

I have been working on gut health for years and as long as I use all my tools, including oils all is usually well.

Daily Lemon drops in hot water to start the day with a detox and immune boost, to balance alkalinity and as an astringent.

Copaiba in my morning Herbalife shake, to help combat inflammation, cramping, infection, or toxicity. And to support cell repair.

Regularly Citrus or Mint oils in my water bottle to support digestion and a yummy flavour boost.

ZenGest on my belly if unsettled.

As Needed ZenGest on my belly and in a capsule internally for added support when my regular tools are not enough.

I use other tools too, drink lots of water, yoga, walking, belly

massage, watching what I eat, crystals etc.

But with time and practice I have learned things like, only take the

ZenGest internally when you really need it.

Otherwise, it loses its potency for my stubborn bowl.

Learn your body and what it needs.

Listen to your body first, then get advice and support.

But always remember to listen to your body s/he is smarter than

you.
