It’s my Birthday month, and I always hit a bit of a low this time of year.
Have you noticed this in your own birthday month? I see it with many of my clients too. I attribute it to bio rhythms.
Anyway, June is also the month of
Winter Solstice
This is the longest night and shortest day of the year and in the Southern Hemisphere it falls on June the 21st, in the Northern Hemisphere it is December 21st and June 21st in the north is Summer Solstice.
At Winter Solstice when it is the darkest time of the year it is also our most inward time and often a dark time for us emotionally.
We may find ourselves less productive and more contemplative. Or perhaps the business of our day to day life feels more challenging at this time.
This is the most Yin phase of the year, where Summer Solstice is the most Yang phase.
Yin relates to all things feminine, wet, dark, cold, passive and creative.
Yang to all things masculine, dry, light, hot, active and organised.
There is Yin and Yang energy in absolutely everything. It is all relative to what you are comparing to as well.
So, the sun is very Yang, but at Winter Solstice it is Grandfather Sun’s most yin phase of the year.
Grandmother Moon is more Yin but in her 8-phase monthly cycle she has four more yin phases and four more yang phases. To complicate it, some yin phases are more yin than others, and vice versa.
Being a women does not mean you are all yin or a man all yang. We must have both, and work to balance the two.
Winter Solstice is a wonderful opportunity to do an honest evaluation with yourself as to how you are truly coping. Your intuition is strong at this time of year, so it is tougher to deceive yourself.
See the Spotlight Advice for some ideas of how to work with and empower this energy.
Astrology Buzz
The Sun is now in and Gemini (May 22 – June 21) this is a perfect opportunity to expand into our truth.
Gemini is an Air sign and as such is very intellectual. Gemini’s like to process life’s experiences by thinking and often over analysing.
Use this inquiring energy to check in, when you feel triggered by someone or something.
Does this FEEL true for me?
Thereby using the thinking energy to tap into the feelings which come from our heart and are more truthful than our thoughts. Or at least less deceptive.
Remember that what was once true for you may not be anymore. It is only through a process of checking in that we will know if we are acting out of habit, just repeating a pattern, or if we are authentically connected to our truth.
Then on the 21st of June we move into the sign of Cancer, on the day of the Winter Solstice.
There is a beauty in this, as we descend to our darkest most vulnerable place, the zodiacal archetype of the mother steps in.
Here again an opportunity to see if you have been doing the shadow work.
Does the ‘mother’ speak lovingly and spportively? Does she nourish and nurture you at this time? Or does the dark mother, rigid, unfeeling, judgmental and quick to criticize lash out?
This depends very much on how you are conditioned versus how you are developing with the shadow work.
Such a huge concept if you feel you are needing shadow work coaching please contact me.
New Moon in Gemini is on June the 3rd. Communication is very much the theme with this sign, so take the time to look at the ways you communicate. Communication is not all verbal, it is how we dress, move, act, speak, listen. What we don’t say is often as important as what we do. What we say becomes our story…do you like the story you keep telling? If not, change it.

JUNE
Mon 3rd: Port Alfred 7-10 pm
Tue 4th: Grahamstown 1.30-4.30
Wed 5th Port Alfred 1.30-4.30
Feel free to inquire about this truly magical monthly gathering of women. Magic happens when women gather. Be part of the magic.
Full Moon is in the sign of Sagittarius this month on the 17th. When working with the opposing energies of Gemini and Sag, we can work at taking action (Sag) on all the ideas of Gemini.
Both signs love information, but where Gemini is eager for any knowledge, Sagittarius brings in more focus, higher learning and converting all the knowledge to wisdom.
Take this full moon to see where you need to focus and then act on your ideas. This Full Moon is like a reboot…if you were starting with a clean slate, what would you put into your new programming.
Crystal picks for June
Keeping with our Winter Solstice theme, I have chosen 3 crystals that feel to me to connect will with Ice, Darkness and Fire. These are the energies we need to focus in on.
Snow Quartz is gentler that many of the Quartz crystals, and also less clear to look at. It has many of the same energies as the master healer, which is clear quartz but in a more muted capacity. There are times when this is especially helpful, like when we are recovering from illness or when there is a lot of emotional stuff at play in our lives.
Aegirine looks a lot like Black Tourmaline. However, if you hold it, it is much lighter, and the energy feels completely different. Like black tourmaline it is grounding and protective. One of the main differences I enjoy working with is where Black Tourmaline protects by stopping anything entering the auric field, Aegirine is more permeable. It selectively lets in what you need to deal with. So, it makes you face the darkness, but you never feel alone rather gently held and lovingly planted in the earth while you do.
Fire Agate has a bright and fiery energy about it. Just what we need for the long months of darkness. In South Africa we have very temperate weather so SAD (Seasonal Affective Disorder) is less of an issue. But it is a well-documented condition affecting many people. It shows us the lack of sunshine can cause physical and emotional symptoms to arise. This stone brings in the promise of light to come, and fire to warm us through the dark cold night.
PostScript; if you are doing the shadow work SAD should begin to ease.
Aromas of the month
Eucalyptus has too many benefits to list. It is safe in correct dilution for babies from 3 months and works brilliantly for respiratory conditions. With this little friend in your toolbox you can breathe easy. It also is a cool heat oil that works very well on aching muscles, fevers, digestive problems, bacteria busting and deodorising. All of that and it is not an expensive oils. As we move into the darkest time of the year, one stiff will help lift you out of the doldrums.
Ginger unlike the cool heat of Eucalyptus, has a warm heat. This is great for the colder times. Also good for muscles, digestion and boosts our immunity. It encourages us while doing that shadow work to look at what is the spice of life for us. Helping us to have courage while finding our passion.
Lemon has a sharp, bright and cheerful scent. Helping to lift us out of the darkness with a little sour sting if we are being morose for too long. It happens to be one of my best bacteria busters and it truly is hard to be blue when taking a deep breath of this juicy bit of sunshine.
A blend idea would be: 4 drops Lemon, 2 Ginger or
3 drops Lemon, 3 Eucalyptus
Remember to write your blends in your blend book so you remember what you liked and what you didn’t.
Spotlight Advice
Winter Solstice
Ironically the point in the Yin phases is to Do Less…yes you heard me right, and yes this is an impossibly difficult thing to do for most of us busy western Yang dominant types.
Once you try this you may will realise it is so much harder than the doing.
Time for your Winter Solstice ritual, to be experienced over the 3 days of solstice if possible 20,21 and 22 June.
1 Have a bath: for me this would include, oils, crystals, homemade bath salts, candles and maybe a guided meditation if I am struggling to focus. However, you design your perfect bath. It is not for reading in or trying to do anything but breath, relax and feel what you feel in your body, your thoughts, your emotions and your soul. For those who struggle to have a bath or sit with their feelings, please try for 10 – 20 min at least.
2 Journal: This would be a post bath journal sesh of at least 10 minutes. Where you write whatever was running through your mind and body in the bath and how you were feeling. Don’t over think it, just let it flow.
3 Get outside: I know it is cold and bare feet may be asking too much, but at least get out under the winter sun and feel those golden rays.
Listen to the sounds of the birds. Watch the cloud pictures in the sky.
Take at least 20 min somewhere in these 3 days to be out in nature and feel her rhythm as we hit the bottom of the mountainous descent. Know that now our ascent up the mountain to the light begins again. Don’t do anything major, just smell, look, feel, sense and hear nature and your inner voice.
